Holidaymaker Diagnosed With Legionnaires’ Disease After Returning from Turkey

An 80 year old women was rushed to intensive care when she became ill just days after returning from a holiday in Turkey, and was diagnosed with legionnaires’ disease.

Shirley Errington, from Washington, first started feeling unwell on the flight home from her time in Turkey, where she had stayed in the town of Belek. Initially she put it down to a bout of the flu, but when her condition worsened her family called an ambulance and she was admitted to the Sunderland Royal Hospital and placed in intensive care on 16th October 2019. She had been found in a semi-conscious state in her home six days after landing from her holiday booked through Jet2.

Tests confirmed that Shirley, who had been placed on a ventilator, had contracted legionnaires’ disease. Public Health England told the family that this case may be linked to the shower in Shirley’s hotel room.

Shirley Errington was released from hospital on 4th November, but due to her poor health she moved in with her daughter and son in law.
